Elder Houghtaling's Email
Monday, July 4, 2016

I'm on!! No, I have not had a chance to read all of your emails yet. Happy 4th of July to you, also!

Alright. I have read all of the emails. Yes, I received a lot of emails.

WHAT THE HECK!!!! That stupid lady! Are you sure Dad is alright? Of course I saw those pictures. I'm glad that he is ok. I hope his car can be fixed. Is it paid off? Do you think that his car is totaled? If so... (hopefully not) he can always buy a new Chevy Cobalt in Brasil. It costs a minimum of 60,000 Reals.
http://www.chevrolet.com.br/carro/cobalt.html

They have S10 trucks here. New. To find out more go to chevrolet.com.br to find out more about the S10. But the bed of it is really small.

How cool! Grandma and Grandpa got a new boat! What are  they going to do with the old pontoon?

I'm doing well. I am thankful for Dad's blanket. And, I can say that it is doing well. I use it to keep warm during the night and during study time. It was warm last night. I think 24 degrees Celsius. Thank you for the forecast, although I think it is a little inaccurate. But, it gives me an idea of what to expect.

For breakfast, I have a kind of roll with butter. It is more of a white bread roll, not like a sweet doughnut. And yes they do have milk in Brasil. But it is about 5 Reals per Liter. I am not drinking the milk here because the milk here is like water with cornstarch. There is absolutely no nutrition in it. They do have ice cream and leafy vegies here. And, I do eat a lot of them. I weigh about 75Kg. They do have pancakes here and cereal.

Here's some stories:

On Monday, seven days ago, me and elder Johns were going to a family home evening and we came into an area with stray dogs. Unfortunately, they are a little territorial, and about a pack of five were coming down the hill we were walking next to. This was a situation where you don't run because, if you do, thy will chase. We continued walking (quickly) and we lived another day without injury.

On Saturday, our Stake had an activity for volunteer day. Me and Elder Johns were making contacts during this activity in the streets. Towards the end of the activity the workers there had questions about the temple. So, we took them over to and inside the temple, and talked with them about the church and temples. They said that they will go to church on Sunday. Although, those people live on the other side of São Paulo.

When I tell Brazilians how big the engine is on my car they are awe struck because the engines here don't exceed 2.5L.

There is a tradition of missionaries; the burning of a shirt after completing one year of their mission.

I will send more pictures later.

I LOVE YOU!

Monday, June 20, 2016

I'm on. Let's talk.

I'm good. Tell Dad that I wish him a happy Father's Day.

So, the two missionaries in the photo are Elder Gimenes and Elder Johns. Elder Gimenes leaves to return home on July 19th and he is from Franca, SP, Brasil. Elder Johns is from Spanish Fork, Utah, and he has a few months left.

The hanger my ties are on is actually for pants.

The meals here aren't all that different from the States. They are usually homemade. A couple of times this week we had to buy lunch because members had something come up, so they gave us money instead. Another time a member wasn't at their house during lunch so my companion and I went to a store called Makro and ate at their restaurant. We usually give lessons to the members when we have lunch with them.

I am receiving the photos that you sent me just fine. About MissionTies... Did you cancel the service? A few days before I left the MTC they (the MTC) gave me a message to cancel the service. But the Lady at MissionTies told me that she would send the messages to the mission office, if there were any. I have not gotten anything from MissionTies since my last P-Day in the MTC.

That's so sad to hear about Simon. I hope that he feels better soon. I saw the pictures of our furry face cats. Thank you for sending them.

I have a question. Did you use Google StreetView when trying to find our apartment? When in GoogleMaps you can access this feature. The photos that you sent... You can't see the apartment from the Satellite photos.

Oh, on Saturday morning our heater for the shower water broke, so it was pretty painful to take a shower. Bit it was fixed by the next morning.

What's happening in the States? I heard about what happened in Orlando. But what I didn't know is that it happened in a LGBT night club.

You asked about a Junerio celebration here in Brazil? I still don't know much about the celebrations down here.

I was able to ride on the bus to the Stake Center of the São Paulo Stake for the baptism. I can say this, Michigan doesn't have the worst roads in the world.

I'd say that the buses here are pretty similar to Michigan. We don't ride the busses too often because we can still get to the stake center relatively easily. But, we had to this time because missionaries at the stake center called us and said that all the preparation we had done had been un-done during the night.

Patricia's family members are not members. But, that will be my goal before I leave the area of Caxingui.

I might take pictures, but, it is not very pretty in my neighborhood. And the place I go to use a computer is called a LAN HOUSE.

I saw a person get hit by a car while trying to cross a cross walk. She was OK, but it looked painful.

I LOVE YOU!!!!

I'm on! I want to talk.

I'm doing well. How are you?

So, I don't know why my new card isn't working at the McDonald's. I insert the chip, and almost immediately it rejects it. The machine rejected it in less than five seconds after I inserted it. I didn't even get to the part where you enter the pin. Please call the bank and tell them but now, please. Of course you know this. I am still able to eat.

Here's how church money works down here. The mission deposits money onto your card every 15 days. You go to Bradsco bank to take all the money out in cash. You get an email from Ecclastical Cards about your transactions on the card.

Anyway, more about other stuff with you in America.

The lady in the photo is Ana. She is a less active becoming active again. She is 20-something and has a two year old child named Tiago (James). We were at the temple for baptisms.

In one of the photos...
Premiere=first, (symbol for baptism), Patricia, was written on the cover for the pizza.

I saw the apartment in the photo you sent.

I didn't make those designs, Elder Johns did. Just neat designs for the Zona do São Paulo.

Guess what today means? 1/12 of the way home.

Have you figured out how to get StreetView in Google Earth?

Are you kidding me? Grandma's cat Milo is missing? I think it was Wednesday, but a cat came up to use yesterday at Ana's house. Probably had a similar story to Maple, being domesticated. So I gave her attention and then handed the cat off to Ana. I was telling myself the entire time, "Do not get attached."

When I was teaching an investigator about the BoM, I was given the opportunity to give the opening prayer. She had a few friends over. Because they're Catholic we held hands during the prayer. One of them (who doesn't believe anything we say) ws speaking jiberish during the entire prayer. I was like, "What is this?!" Yep, that's the best story I have right now.

Just in case we get cut off, I LOVE YOU!!!!! Oh, and I told my companion about our nightly tradition,

"Good night, sleep tight,
Wake up bringht in the morning light,
To do what's right with all of your might!
I love you!
Good  night!"

I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thursday, June 9, 2016

Yes! We received your son, Elder Houghtaling, Elder Wright, Elder Siglin and Elder Cazier here in our mission on Tuesday. They arrived well and are already in their own areas carrying out the Lord's work with their Trainers. You will receive his letter of arrival either today or tomorrow!

His P-day is Monday. You should receive an email from him then.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us! We were happy that we received each of these missionaries. They are ready and excited to be able to carry out the Lord's work.

Best regards,

Elder Bradshaw, Secretário Executivo
Missão Brasil São Paulo Oeste

Hey! I want to talk! Hey, Mom. I'm on now with about an hour of time.

I'm really close to the Temple but it isn't in my area. My area is Jardin Caxingui. Elder P. Lima is a cool guy who has about a year left in the field. There was an Elder Lima in this mission when he got here so they added the middle initial to this tag. He's from the capital of Brazil, Brasilia.

Will you send everything to the mission home, and they will forward it to me in the field. I got your package on Thursday. However, I have not gotten the 2nd package yet.

I'm doing well. I'm trying to speak Portuguese, and I'm just not fluent. Something weird about the Portuguese language is the di makes a gi sound. I suggest talking with Paula about pronunciation. I think there is a slight difference, I think Portugal is more formal than Brazil.

We have our first baptism this Friday. Her name is Patricia. We will take pictures.

We have lunch appointments because apparently dinner isn't a celebrated meal here. Occasionally we and the other elders in the 'apartment' will order some food and have it delivered.

There are two sets of elders in our apartment. I share a room with my companion.

I am staying warm during the day. Once you become used to the weather, and then it drops below 20 degrees C, it will feel cold. BTW I do know the forecast because I was able to see it on the missionary portal. I am not cold at night because of the Michigan State blanket Dad is letting me use.

I do know that we live near our ward building, which is not in our area. Ha! We don't even live in our area! There are no buses, it's about a seven minute walk into our area. And were about 30 minutes by foot from the Temple.

Laundry is gong well. We have to hang everything in the house because we don't have a dryer. Showers are warm, but we have no furnace. And, yes, we have multiple fans.

Yes, I was able to read your entire email and others before you responded. Have you been checking the forecast for here? About the winters here, they seem like Spring, or Fall in the States.

I have an approximate address:
93 Rua Joao Correa da Silva Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo 05541-200 Brasil

Our apartment building is the gray door to the right of the gray garage.

I don't think you can flush toilet paper but I'm not sure. I'm sure a little bit won't hurt the system.

An answer to your question about if Brazilians take showers multiple times a day; my companion takes a shower in the morning and the evening.

Oh, there is a McDonalds in my area. We ate there Friday for dinner. All of the food is pretty similar to the USA. I like the food here.

Oh! I packed the wrong exercise pants. I packed the small ones.

I have seven minutes. So, the guy that runs the computer bar here currently is playing some fantasy game, and his laugh is quite annoying.

I LOVE YOU!!!!! Until next week!
